Word Family Paint Cards

A while ago I was introduced to this blog post by The Snail's Trail. I fell in love with all of the colours and decided I had to have my own set.

The concept is simple. Using the free paint sample cards you get from the store, write out word beginnings and word endings. An almost endless number of word combinations are now possible!

I was super excited when I found these paint chips at Lowe's. They ALREADY had the square holes in them! Yeah for one less step!

Then you look at a beginning sound/sounds through the hole and VOILA! A new word! I plan to use them in my Word Work centre. I have specific word families/patterns for each week, so I have labeled each one with the grade first and then the week it is used.

Grade 1-week 13  and Grade 2-week 1
If you are interested in my Grade 1/2 spelling and word wall list, you can download them for free!
I also wrote out all of the endings I would need for each list here.

See you soon!

  1. I LOVE this idea! It looks so beautiful and what a great use of paint colour cards! I'll have to remember that if I ever get to teach a younger grade. I wonder if I could somehow incorporate it into my classroom.

  2. I've seen them used for flashcards and many other things. I know someone as creative as you can find a use!
