Freebie- Sight Word Challenge Cards

Today I am sharing my Sight Word Strategy for this year. I was inspired by The Teaching Bell and modified her system to fit my needs.

Sight Word Challenge
Here's how it works. Using the Dolch Sight Word Lists (in order of frequency, as found on the site above), I created 22 Challenge Lists. Each list contains 10 words. Students receive the Title Page (with Parent letter printed on the back) and the first list on a Binder Ring.

Students practice the list at home AT LEAST 3 times (as signed and dated by the parent) Then students may ask to be tested (I will call them up every week or so if they don't ask). If they can read the entire list, they get a happy face. If they missed a word, I will circle the word and they have to practice that list again. If they complete the list, students get the next list. After 5 lists, students must review the previous 5 lists and pass them in one sitting in order to move on to List 6. If students complete all of my lists, other vocabulary or word family lists can be created.

Students can work at their own pace, not moving on until they have mastered those words. Teaching a split grade, I will expect my Grade 2's to fly through the first few lists. I am using a "ticket" system in my room this year, where students earn tickets for various activities (completed reading log, making it to the top of our behaviour chart, etc) Each list completed will also earn the student a ticket.

I am excited to try this system out this year. I had a lot of parents that were overwhelmed with the lists of sight words that were going home to be practiced. This way, the small list of 10 words is easily manageable. Click below to get PDF copies of the lists. The student cards are printed on blank 3X5 index cards. I have also included Individual Student Checklists and a Class List to keep track of lists completed. If you would like Word Documents, leave your email in the comments.

*UPDATE* A few people have asked for the Word Versions, but when I tried to upload them, the formatting was completely off. I think it is because I used a downloaded font. I was able to upload a blank template that could be used to enter your own words.

In order to print on Index Cards, on my personal printer at home, I simple move the sides of the paper tray in until it fits the paper. I'm not sure if it would work on a big printer, like at school. I have also never tried copying onto index cards. I would think that the "Free Size" option might work, but let me know if you try it!

  1. This is great! I'm not sure how to print on index cards though... any tips? If you don't mind sharing the WORD version, that would be great!
